Why You Need to Make Sure You Are Brushing the Roof of Your Mouth

Obviously using mouthwash and brushing teeth are a good part of oral hygiene. However, good oral hygiene is about more than just brushing the teeth. In order to lower the bacteria population in one´s mouth, one must brush the tongue, the cheeks, and the roof of the mouth. This leaves fewer bacteria in the mouth to attack the teeth and gums. It also lowers the risk of bad breath. And it maintains the mouth in much better health overall. Sadly, many people do not brush the roof of their mouths or other parts of the mouth that need brushing. They need to be reminded. If you are uncertain about any aspect of how to properly clean your mouth, please come by our office for more information.

The Roof of the Mouth

The roof of the mouth is not a smooth place. There are many ridges on the roof of the mouth. As the roof is not visible, we tend not to pay attention to it. The ridges on the roof of the mouth are effectively hiding spaces for food particles and the bacteria that feed on them. The decay of food in these ridges contributes to bad breath. A person may have properly brushed and flosses but still have bad breath or a nasty taste in one´s mouth due to an unclean roof or other parts of the mouth that should be cleaned.

It´s important to clean out the roof and these other places. Your mouth will feel fresher after you brush the roof. And your breath will stay cleaner for much longer. You won´t need to use as many breathe mints. And you substantially reduce the probability of mouth sores or infections of other soft tissues within the mouth. For a proper examination of the soft tissues of your mouth, please give us a call.
