Can White Fillings Get Stained?

 White fillings are more popular than traditional silver fillings which are more visible when a patient is speaking or eating. Made of tooth colored resin and glass composite it is used to fill in cavities or missing sections of teeth. Whether damaged by injuries or general tooth decay the white fillings are a popular solution.The reason they are used so regularly is because their coloring is the same as the patient's natural tooth color, they blend in. They provide a repair for a missing section of tooth where as traditional silver fillings cannot. They tend to be more expensive than traditional dental fillings and are not as durable. Can White Dental Fillings be Stained?The biggest weakness to white fillings is that yes, they can be stained. They are porous just like a patient's natural teeth. Because of this, they can be stained easily. Once stained it is difficult to remedy the situation. The same food and drinks which stain natural teeth can stain a white filling. These include, Colas, red wine, coffee and tea. Smoking will also stain white fillings as well. Can You Totally Avoid Stains?There are some things that can be done to minimize the chance of stains. Watch your diet. Don't eat or ingest coffee, tea, certain berries, Colas, or red wine. If you do happen to ingest them, rinse your mouth out immediately following to minimize the amount of contact. It is also imperative to maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day with a soft bristle toothbrush to remove any residual food or drink on the surface of the tooth. You should also start using a non-abrasive toothpaste so it will be gentle to the filling. Whitening toothpastes can rough the surface of the filling, making it prone to staining.
