There are a lot of people who have a dental phobia today. In fact, between 9% - 15% of people suffer from such a phobia today. You can't let this keep you from visiting your dentist and having your teeth properly taken care of though. Instead, you need to find a way to overcome your phobia. One suggestion is talk therapy. Can Talking Help you Manage Dental Anxiety?Talk therapy, also known as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), can help many people who have dental phobia overcome their fear of visiting the dentist. However, it will take at least 5 sessions before you notice yourself benefiting from it. This is because in this therapy you're taught how to manage your anxiety by changing how you think about and behave towards it instead of avoiding it. In the past, sedation was the only thing dentists would offer when a patient was suffering from dental phobia. Although this was helpful in getting a patient past their treatment, it really didn't help with the phobia itself. However, CBT can help about 75% of people work through their phobia so they can receive dental treatment without any type of sedation. While talking to a therapist is a great option, we never want you to feel like you can't talk to us too. We won't ever claim to be able to do the same thing for you as a therapist can, but we want you to feel comfortable with us as well. So, if you ever have any questions or you just want to discuss your treatment, we hope you know that we're here for you. We want to hear your thoughts, emotions, and physical feelings about your dental treatments. When you tell us about these things, we'll do our best to help you feel more comfortable. |
