What is Gum Disease

Everybody knows that if you don't take care of your teeth, eventually they will become infected with decay and you might end up losing them. What people don't seem to realize is that the same is true of your gums. That's right; your gums are affected by the same bacteria that attack your teeth if it isn't removed by daily brushing and flossing. The result is known as gum disease and can lead to tooth and even bone loss in your jaw. Fortunately, at Century Dental, we are well versed in identifying, diagnosing, and treating gum disease in all its forms. We can help you come out on top in the battle against gum disease!

What is Periodontal Disease / Gum Disease?

Oral Cancer Screening

Gum disease, also known as Periodontal Disease, is an infection of the gums by the bad bacteria that live within your mouth. With regular brushing and flossing, gum disease should be easily kept at bay, but if you forget your oral hygiene habits for a period, your gums may start to show signs of infection.

Warning Signs For Gum Disease Are Hard to Detect

The signs of gum disease aren't often caught by the patient who is affected by this malady because discomfort is not one of the symptoms that accompany gum disease. You may have gum disease and not even realize that it is affecting your mouth. Some of the most prominent signs of gum disease are:
•  Gums that bleed easily or frequently
•  Red, tender, swollen gums
•  Gums that have pulled away from the surface of the teeth
•  Bad breath that does not go away
•  Teeth that are loose that should not be
•  Significant changes in the way your teeth fit together
•  Any change in the way your dentures or partial dentures fit

If you notice any of the above symptoms, give us a call today at (971) 708-1608 as they could be a sign that you are developing gum disease.

There are certain factors that increase the risk of developing gum disease - things like smoking, pregnancy, and diabetes. Visit us at least twice a year for a cleaning and examination, and we will check for the signs and symptoms that indicate gum disease.

Early Stage of Gum Disease is Called Gingivitis

The early stage of gum disease is commonly called gingivitis and is marked by gums that bleed easily, red gums, and swollen gums. It is critical that we catch the issue at this stage because gingivitis is a reversible disease. If we catch gum disease at this point, we can bring your mouth back to its former glory.

General Health and Oral Disease

Advanced Gum Disease is Called Periodontitis

Periodontitis is what the late stages of gum disease is commonly called. Once the issue progresses to this point, it is not possible to cure, but we can still treat it and minimize the effects. Bone and tooth loss can result from the food particles and bacteria that build up below the gumline, so it is important that you come in for root planing and scaling as soon as possible. When you have advanced gum disease, it can start to effect your overall health.

Please call us today at (971) 708-1608 to schedule an appointment for gum treatment.
