Call Our Office if You Have a Fever and a Toothache
Posted on 9/7/2020 by Dr. Call
Our mouths contain harmful bacteria that constantly attack our teeth and gums. Under certain circumstances, however, those harmful bacteria can cause more severe problems. One example is when the bacteria responsible for periodontitis work their way into the bloodstream, causing heart problems and blood clots. Similarly, the bacteria that trigger toothaches can also give the patient a fever. If left unchecked, the root problems responsible for the toothaches and fever can inflict additional damage to the mouth and potentially spread to other parts of the body. A toothache by itself is reason enough to call our office, but you should call immediately if you have both a toothache and a fever.
When an Abscess Triggers Fevers and Toothaches
An abscessed tooth is a tooth that gets gradually separated from the gums, often as a result of periodontitis. Abscessed teeth are vulnerable to harmful bacteria due to their exposed roots. When the harmful bacteria infect an abscessed tooth, the resulting symptoms include toothaches and fevers. Fillings, root canals, tooth extractions, and dental implants are some potential solutions to abscessed teeth.
When a Sinus Infection Triggers Fevers and Toothaches
Though not directly an oral health issue, sinus infections can cause teeth to hurt. Infected sinuses exert pressure on teeth, which causes pain and discomfort to the teeth. Whereas our team cannot treat the sinus infection directly, our professionals advise our patients to see their primary care providers before the sinus infection causes lasting damage to the teeth. The patient's primary care doctor might employ solutions such as antibiotics, nasal drops, and various methods of nasal cleaning.
The combination of a fever and a toothache can constitute a dental emergency. If you have both symptoms, call our office immediately to set up an emergency appointment.
