Fillings are an economical and excellent way to repair a tooth that is decayed. Fillings can last a long time if they are done well and if you take care of your teeth properly. We see patients who have had fillings for 20 years before they have to come in because a problem has developed. If you think you have a loose filling, call us and make an appointment as soon as you can. In the meantime, avoid chewing on foods that are sticky or that are crunchy. If you can avoid eating on that side of your mouth, that would be ideal. Also, be careful when you brush because that could loosen it more. When you come in, we will check your filling and see if it is loose and if it is, what the treatment plan would be. It could be reinforced or if it has been damaged, it may need to be replaced. How Do I Know if It's Loose? Most people run their tongue across their teeth at some point during the days. When you do this, if you have a loose filling, you may notice that it feels different. You may feel edges that used to be smooth, for example. Or, you may notice a small space where there was not one before. Another sign is that your tooth may become sensitive. You may notice pain when you drink or eat something that is hot or cold. Though this can also be a sign that you have a cavity, if it is combined with a difference in the way your tooth is shaped, it is more likely a loose filling. If by chance your filling should fall out, call us immediately. Save the filling if possible. You should clean it well to avoid bacteria forming on it and bring it with you when you come to see us. Many times the original filling is fine, it was the dental cement that failed. In these cases, the filling can be recemented in place. |
