Regardless of how much stress you are under, a healthy diet is important. Certain foods can minimize your symptoms, while others can make them worse. Find out what foods you need to eat – or avoid – to improve your overall feelings of stress. Caffeine and Stress People who live stressed, busy lives may turn to caffeine to get the energy boost that they need throughout the day. This can actually be counterproductive. Caffeine is an addictive substance and can leave you feeling jittery. If you suffer from bruxism and often grind your teeth, you may notice that your symptoms worsen when you consume caffeine. Tea and Stress If you suffer from high amounts of stress in your personal or professional life, a cup of tea before bed may be a good idea. Tea can leave you feeling calmer, and when you are more relaxed before you turn in for the night, you'll reduce your risk of grinding while you sleep. Sugar and Stress If you are looking to cut stress from your life, you'll also want to cut out the sugar. When you eat foods that are high in sugar, your blood sugar also spikes. In response, your body releases cortisol to balance the sugar levels, and an influx of cortisol could lead to headaches, sleep problems, and feelings of fear and anxiousness. These are not good signs if you also deal with bruxism. Alcohol and Stress Many people don't realize that alcohol is actually a depressant, so you shouldn't use it to combat stress after a long day. In fact, alcohol causes a release of hormones that will make you feel more stressed and anxious, which may lead to teeth grinding.
