Did You Know That a Healthy Smile Helps You Remember?

Did You Know That a Healthy Smile Helps You Remember?Having a healthy smile helps with many things in life – from successfully engaging with people, to having body confidence, even reducing the risks of serious diseases like cancer and diabetes. But did you know that keeping your mouth in its best condition can also help improve memory?

The Mouth-Mind Link

Research from acclaimed doctors has indicated that there are many ways that the treatment of your mouth influences the development of your vital organs, including your brain. Chronic inflammation, such as that experienced as a result of gum disease, causes difficulty in blood flow to the tissues in your head by constricting nerves and reducing their function. It can further inflame other organs the longer they are left untreated, including the brain. This can lead to reduced or broken memory.

Science has also shown that the best way to remember is to emphatically think upon what you want to remember for thirty seconds, looking around your environment every half second or so to keep your brain actively engaged. This can be difficult to do though when in pain from dental illness, which most of us understandably do not want to be part of our memories.

Furthermore, there are links between rote activities and developing strong memories, which means that those things you do every day by habit – such as brushing your teeth, flossing, and rinsing after meals – can in turn help improve your long-term memory. By engaging in repetitive, fixed activities, your memory will gradually improve and become more capable of recollection.

Not only are daily oral hygiene activities important for your mouth, they are also important for your brain. If you have any questions about how your smile can influence your health, both physically and mentally, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We'd be glad to help you form a new memory that is worth keeping of our compassionate dental care!
