Skipping Dental Appointment Can Cause Cumulative Damage to Your Teeth

Dental Appointment Century Dental OR 97123-6753So, you've skipped a couple of dental appointments over the last few years - no big deal, right? Not necessarily. There is a reason that the American Dental Association recommends dental cleanings and evaluations every six months.

Without proper preventive treatment, you may experience cumulative damage to your teeth, gums, and mouth.

Plaque and Tartar

Regardless of how well you brush, your teeth will accumulate plaque. This substance can damage the enamel, which is why it is so important to remove it regularly.

However, if you skip dental appointments, that plaque will eventually harden into tartar, which is a rough substance that can't be removed by flossing or brushing. Only your dentist will be able to remove it, and failure to do so could lead to cavities and decay.

Gum Disease

Many people are living with gum disease and don't even know it. That's why at each dental appointment, your dentist will check for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease.

Gum disease can lead to major problems, including tooth loss, and it will worsen with time. If you skip your dental appointments, you may miss out on treatment when your gum disease is in its earliest and most treatable stages.

Oral Cancer

At each dental appointment, your hygienist and dentist will do thorough evaluations on your mouth. One reason for this close inspection is to look for signs of oral cancer. This common cancer is very treatable in its earliest stages.

Unfortunately, symptoms that you might notice won't show up until after the cancer has spread, so your dentist is really your first line of defense in detecting oral cancer.

Have you missed a few dental appointments? Don't be embarrassed or afraid to get back into the dental chair. We want to ease your dental anxiety and discomfort. Contact us today to set up your appointment.
