Tooth Staining Century Dental OR 97123-6753Our culture is very fashion forward, which is why having a bright, white smile has become so important today. Of course, with this type of smile, we're also much more confident in ourselves.

While many people are turning to teeth whitening techniques, which are fine, it's also important to realize that your diet plays a huge role here too.

Best Drinks to Avoid to Reduce Tooth Staining

You probably already realize that you should avoid drinking coffee, tea, and wine (both red or blush and white) as they tend to really stain your teeth. Water is obviously the best choice of drink. Milk is also beneficial. In fact, you can lighten your coffee with milk and thus decrease the number of stains you may experience too.

It's also important that you don't overdo it with carbonated drinks because they contain acids and dyes that can stain your teeth and destroy your enamel because of their high sugar content. Additionally, sports drinks are another culprit. This is because they're also very acidic and acid erodes your enamel.

Best Foods to Avoid to Reduce Tooth Staining

Dark colored and dyed foods also stain your teeth. This includes tomato sauce, curry, blueberries, blackberries, and cherries. Candy is yet another culprit.

Lollipops and hard candy spend too much time in your mouth where they coat your teeth and tongue with colored syrup. Sugary gum and popsicles are a few of the other treats that you should either avoid or at least limit.

At home, you can brush, floss, and use mouthwash to maintain your teeth's appearance. It's also important to drink plenty of water. When you drink a beverage that you know will stain your teeth, try to do so through a straw. Make sure you also visit our office twice a year for proper preventative dental care.
