6 Problems with High Dental Fillings

Posted on 1/30/2016 by Dr. Call
A diagram of a dental metal filling.Have you ever heard of a high dental filling? A filling is referred to as high when too much of the filling material projects away from the cavity and the rest of the tooth. While dentists try to avoid this issue, it does happen periodically and can be uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, a dental filling that is too high can lead to some problems, so they should be corrected as soon as possible:

•  Premature wear. With a high filling, the bite of the tooth is often affected, causing your tooth to rub up against other teeth. This could cause the enamel to wear down, making the tooth vulnerable to decay.
•  Pain with biting. A dental filling that is too high can result in pain when you bite down, as the ligaments around the tooth can become inflamed and sore.
•  TMJ troubles. When high fillings are involved, TMJ problems can occur if you have difficulties biting down or chewing. You may also start to clench or grind your teeth in response to the pain and discomfort that you feel when biting.
•  Headaches. With TMJ pain often comes headaches. Pain in the jaw and facial muscles can easily lead to chronic headaches, especially in the morning.
•  Shifting teeth. When high filings are in place, the jaw can shift. Additionally, if the other teeth are subjected to a high level of stress from the filling, they could start to move out of place.
•  Sensitivity. When the teeth begin to wear down and the enamel is removed, the nerve can become exposed. This will increase the sensitivity of the tooth, making it highly affected by food items and drinks that are hot, cold, or especially sweet.

Services Offered

Preventive Dentistry

We are passionate about preventing problems before they start. We do so by educating our patients about what positive dental habits they can be forming and having our patients visit us twice a year for exams and cleanings.

Restorative Dentistry

We understand that often, due to circumstances outside of your control, your mouth may need restorative actions taken. That’s why we offer a bevy of restorative procedures to bring your smile back to it’s original luster.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Frequently we hear that the procedures that make the biggest difference in our patient’s smiles are cosmetic in nature. Whitening, veneers and Invisalign® are just a few of the cosmetic procedure we offer!

IV Sedation

For those patients that need more than just oral sedation we offer what is often called “sleep sedation”. If anxiety is an issue or if the procedure calls for it we can easily place you under full anesthesia to ensure that you rest peacefully through the whole thing.

Dental Implants

If you have lost a tooth or are looking at tooth removal as an option, dental implants are the most highly recommended form of replacement for teeth. Dental implants involve inserting a titanium post into your jaw which will fuse with your bone structure. The post will be topped with a crown made specifically to fit your bite. The result is a form of tooth replacement that looks and acts exactly as your real tooth would. It even prevents bone loss, which is a common side effect of tooth loss.

Dental Technology

We are happy to use a great variety of cutting edge technology in our practice. Digital X-rays are one of our staples in dental tech. Standard X-rays can take time to view and process but with the advent of digital X-rays we can view the inner workings of your mouth almost instantly. We are also able to take higher quality X-rays that allow us to detect things like tooth decay within the tooth, cysts, tumors, and impacted teeth. Further, the radiation you receive from a digital X-ray device is about 1/5th that of a standard X-ray.

We also offer intraoral cameras and ultrasonic scalers. The intraoral cameras aid us in detecting any issues within your mouth that may need further dental attention. Ultrasonic scalers are by far the most effective method for removing built up plaque and tartar that has accumulated on teeth.
